Equestrian Endurance Race
Not all endurance racing involves running shoes, a bike, and a swimsuit. Some racing, like equestrian endurance, requires a horse and a saddle instead. Melissa sent us this story and some pics from Oregon and California. What gorgeous backdrops for a race!
“This ride was in Prinville, Oregon in the Ochoco National Forest. There was a 30, 50, 80 and 100 mile race. In endurance you have a set amount of time to complete the race with a sound, safe horse.
This was my second ride on my quarter horse Playboy’s Little Star. We did the 30 mile ride, but it turned into an adventurous 40 mile ride because we got lost twice!! We just finished our 3rd ride in the Redwoods Forest in Orick California where we came in 13th out of 30 riders. Here are a few additional pictures of the Redwoods ride. Star did great for a new endurance horse. Edurance riding/racing is a great sport with a lot of wonderful people who love their horses.”

Quarter horses were not just bred for cutting, but for riding all day out on the range. The lighter boned ones (favoring their thoroughbred forbears) should do pretty well in endurance as would the crosses e.g Quarabs. Good for heavier weight adults and those wanting something with a mild temperament. A well-bred “cow pony” is a great little horse!

I’m new to the horse world and would certainly love to try out the smaller 30mile endurance race. Where could i find more information about that? Thanks!
