It’s back to reality for most of us today as the long 4th of July weekend comes to a close. Hopefully you had great time and got outside this weekend. The weather was beautiful in most parts of the country… especially in Oregon, where a 48 year-old man took an extraordinary flight.

This extraordinary flight wasn’t in a plane, though… or a hot air balloon. Kent Couch flew more than 200 miles in a lawn chair rigged with helium balloons! That’s right - a lawn chair rigged with helium balloons. Couch’s lawn chair, complete with over 150 party balloons managed to fly 235 miles in 9 hours and cross over into Idaho before landing in a rural area where he caused quite a bit of excitement. But first he had to land - by shooting the balloons with a BB gun to release the helium.

How much does biologist Adam Warwick love bears? Enough to save a 375-pound black bear from drowning in the Gulf of Mexico.

Warwick jumped in the Gulf to save a gigantic black bear when he noticed the bear showing “signs of distress.” The bear, who had wandered into a residential neighborhood near Tallahassee, had been shot with a tranquilizer dart right before it rushed into the Gulf. Once it had gotten out to sea a bit, the sedation started to take hold and the bear became disoriented.

On the heels of last year’s successful film ‘Into the Wild,’ pilgrimages to the spot where Christopher McCandless died are on the rise.

Some people visit seeking adventure, some make the trek because they feel a connection to McCandless, and some just want to see the bus where he took shelter and later died of starvation. The bus has become a mecca of sorts for backpackers.

Adventures in Patagonia, Part II

After an amazingly rewarding and challenging trip to Torres del Paine, Erin and I set our sights north on the other gem of Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park. We took a several-hour bus ride from Puerto Natales, Chile, across the border and windswept grassy plains of Patagonia to El Calafate, Argentina, admiring the stunning mountain vistas to the west on a clear blue-sky day.
