K2 Climbing Tragedy Diagrams and Illustrations

Bottleneck_k2_avalanche_photo_graphic_1.jpgThe avalanche on K2 last week is being called the worst mountaineering disaster ever on the mountain, the world’s second-tallest peak. 11 climbers were killed as they tried to make their way across a treacherous section of the mountain called “The Bottleneck.”

The New York Times posted these illustrations of the mountain and the avalanche area, to give us a better feel for what happened. One climber died on the summit attempt and a porter was killed trying to claim his body. The avalanche didn’t happen until the climbers who had reached the summit were making their descent. The falling snow killed some climbers and severed anchored lines, trapping others in the frigid, low-oxygen “Dead Zone.”

Wild West Relay: 24 Feet, 36 Legs, 195 Miles

WWR__Team_14_Shot.jpgWhen I told my friends I was running the 195-mile Wild West Relay race last weekend, a lot of them thought I was crazy. “Why on Earth would you want to do that?” they said. Well, for one, because it’s a challenge and two, because it sounds like a lot of fun. I was so very right on both accounts.

If you’re a runner (no matter what level) and you’ve never taken part in a long-distance relay, I highly suggest you enter one. It was by far the coolest athletic event I’ve ever been a part of. Definitely not easy… but nothing worthwhile ever is, right?

Around-the-World with Drew & Erin: Bolivia

Join The Blogging Post as we head around-the-world with our friends Drew & Erin. They’ll be sending us regular dispatches and updates from around, across, and all over the globe. This is their second post from Bolivia…

Bumpy Bolivia

Bolivia_2_1.JPGWhen Erin and I boarded the overnight, eighteen-hour bus ride from Tarija to La Paz, we were not sure what to expect. Our day of arrival into Bolivia had been a rough one with a long half-day at the hot, dusty border outpost of Bermejo, waiting several hours for a visa at the immigration office and several hours more for a windy bus ride north to Tarija. But once in Tarija, we had a very comfortable and relaxing week-long stay in the home of Perales family. We were not sure what to expect next – tough or easy. It turned out to be a bit of both.

Did Adventurer Steve Fossett Fake His Disappearance?

Steve_Fossett_Disappears.jpgIt’s been almost a year since legendary adventurer Steve Fossett went missing while flying over of a remote area of Nevada desert. He was never found and reports are now surfacing that the whole thing may have been an elaborate sham. Steve Fossett may have faked his own death.

Could he have? Certainly. He was an extraordinary adventurer, explorer, and survivalist. The plane he was flying, according to sources, could have been easily dismantled and hidden. He was also worth billions of dollars - surely enough to expedite his escape from the country and set him up nicely somewhere off the radar. But did he actually fake his own death? No one knows for sure, but some people think it’s possible - probable even. His plane hasn’t been found, his body hasn’t been found… nothing has been found.
