Podcast Interview with Adventurer Rick Ridgeway

Rick Ridgeway, mountaineerThis week on Adventure Edge Radio, we’re featuring an interview with Rick Ridgeway, who was recently inducted into the Adventure Hall of Fame by National Geographic Adventure magazine.

Ridgeway has been a leading mountaineer – he was one of the first Americans to scale K2 – and adventurer for over 35 years. Ridgeway is also the VP of Environmental Programs and Communication for Patagonia, the outdoor gear and clothing company.

Ridgeway and Patagonia have most recently teamed up with Freedom to Roam, an initiative that aims to provide migratory routes for large animals through protected wildlife corridors in the U.S. and Canada. Based on the fact that big animals require hundreds of miles of interconnected, undisturbed habitat in order to thrive, Freedom to Roam has established several large eco-system conservation campaigns on both private and public land. To learn more about Freedom to Roam, visit their website.

Podcast Interview with Adventurers Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper

Rob Gauntlett and James Hopper, Adventurers of the YearThis week on Adventure Edge Radio, we’re featuring an interview with, and paying tribute to, Rob Gauntlett. Together with James Hooper, Gauntlett (at right) was named Adventurer of the Year for 2008 by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

Sadly, Gauntlett passed away on January 10th while mountaineering and ice climbing in the French Alps; he was just 21 years old.

Last month, we interviewed Gauntlett and Hooper from their homes in England. The duo had just received the Adventurer of the Year honor for a 26,000 mile journey via dog sled, ski, bicycle and sailboat from the magnetic North Pole to the magnetic South Pole and then on to Australia – a feat that had never before been accomplished.

It is with a heavy heart that we post the interview, knowing it was Gauntlett’s last. His beautiful spirit and unstoppable drive live on through his accomplishments and the friends and family he left behind. Our hope is that his words will inspire us all to reach for our dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.

Steger has become an expert voice on global warming and climate change and has testified before Congress about that very issue. Steger was awarded National Geographic Society’s John Oliver La Gorce Medal for accomplishments in geographic exploration, in the sciences, and for public service to advance international understanding. Steger is in prestigious company – other award winners include Amelia Earhart, Robert Peary and Jacques Cousteau.

Podcast Interview with Runner, SEAL David Goggins

David Goggins on the cover of Runner's WorldThis week on Adventure Edge Radio, we have a great podcast interview with runner David Goggins. Dubbed a “hero of running” in the current issue of Runners World, Goggins, a Navy SEAL whose primary focus is charity work, epitomizes that title.

Goggins began running endurance races just a few short years ago, after being deeply affected by the deaths of fellow SEAL’s in Afghanistan. His goal was to raise funds for the Special Operations Warriors Foundation – a group that attends to the educational needs of the children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed while training or in battle.

Goggins has since completed the 135-mile Badwater Ultra Marathon and the Ironman Triathlon as well as several other ultra-running events. He also plans to ride a bicycle across America in 2009.

Our gear highlight this week is on a unique winter product called Yaktrax. Yep, they’re as cool as they sound.
