Tips for Working Out in the Cold

snowshoeing_winter.jpgShorter days, cooler temps, chilly breezes… autumn is upon us. And soon, winter will be. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up the workout routine you’ve been enjoying all spring and summer. You can either take it inside or get smart about working out in the cold.

Tips for Cold-Weather Workouts

1. Dress in layers. Layering is essential when working out in the cold. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid layer, an insulating layer, and if you expect drizzle, don’t forget a waterproof outer layer. Check out our Layering Guide for more information.

2. Warm up indoors first. Jogging in place for five minutes before you head out will loosen up your muscles and get your heart and lungs ready for the cold air.

Kayak + 107 Foot Waterfall = World Record

Last time we mentioned Tyler Bradt, it was because he took the veggie-fueled KAVU bus on a Pan-American road trip.

Tyler_Bradt_Waterfall_Kayak.JPGThis time, we’re talking about Tyler because he just scored a new world record. He survived a 107 foot drop over Alexandra Falls in his kayak… and paddled away from it without even flipping. That’s him in the upper right hand corner of the photo–just a tiny little boat on a big, big river.

I suppose paddling over a waterfall is safer than going over in a barrel, but I’m not sure just how much safer. Bradt’s partner in crime, Rush Sturges, also went over but was ejected from his kayak upon impact and flung behind the falls and into a cave. He made four attempts to swim out before he was finally able to. He did say, however, that hitting the water didn’t hurt, but that it was “amazingly soft, like falling into a bunch of cotton or something.” Falling 107 feet into a giant pile of cotton–now that’s more like it. Take that Skateboard To Go

Pronto-skateboard-portable_2.jpgWhen you think of a skateboard, you probably picture a long fixed board with four bulky wheels. Fun to ride, but awkward to carry, hard to shove in a backpack, and even harder to stuff in a locker or under a seat, right?

Think again.

The Pronto Stowboard is changing the way skateboards travel. It’s small to begin with and it folds down to less than a foot long so you can stash it just about anywhere.

Hiking and Crazy Mountain Biking: Video

aspen_hiking_trail.JPGFall is just around the corner and there’s no better time of year to take a hike. The weather is getting milder, the leaves will soon be changing, and the sun is getting a little less intense.

Now is the perfect time to hit the trail.

A couple of years ago, National Geographic Adventure published an article on the Top 11 Trails in the world. A lot has changed in two years, but probably not this. Five of them are on U.S. soil and the #1 trail is in Colorado. Read More »
