Something about this just sounds like a bad idea. The Titanic, as we all know, never reached its destination. But a tourism company in England is organizing a 100th Anniversary of the <a href="http://www.titanicmemorialcruise.co.uk/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Titanic Memorial Cruise.

The tour will attempt to replicate the maiden voyage of the “unsinkable ship” by holding a service at the location where it sank, making a stopover where survivors were sent and ending up in New York City, where the Titanic was supposed to dock.

The cruise, which will take place in 2012, 100 years after the sinking of the original Titanic, is supposedly filling up quickly so you’d better reserve your spot now if this sounds like a good time to you…

The ship will sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic site on April 14th/15th exactly 100 years on from this tragic voyage, where a memorial service will be held to pay tribute to the brave passengers and crew who perished on that fateful night. The voyage will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the final resting place of many who were on board, before sailing on to New York, the Titanic’s ultimate planned destination.

Hmmm… I think I’ll pass. But if you’d like to go, <a href="http://www.titanicmemorialcruise.co.uk/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">visit the website and book your reservation for this “historic” cruise. Prices range from 2,690 to 5,990 Euros for any remaining cabins. The ship is associated with the same company that constructed the Titanic, which according to promoters, is a good thing. According to me, not such a good thing.

What do you think? Would you want to reenact the Titanic’s voyage?

We told you awhile back about the concern of using <a href="http://blog.sierratradingpost.com/in-outdoors-camping-gear-forest-trails/cancer-scare-causes-nalgene-to-pull-plastic-bottles/"target="_blank">hard plastic water bottles (like Nalgene) due to their bisphenol A, or BPA, content.

BPA is a chemical that’s been found to adversely affect the nervous system and cause certain cancers.

BPA is also used to make other types of plastics, including the tubing hospitals use to <a href="http://blog.sierratradingpost.com/health-exercise-workout-fitness-tips-tips/plastic-tied-to-problems-in-preemies/"target="_blank">feed premature babies (among other things). And apparently it also lines the cans used to package canned foods. If you frequently eated canned soups, vegetables or juices, you may be getting a large dose of BPA each time you do.

A <a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/health/healthy-living/health-safety/bpa/overview/bisphenol-a-ov.htm"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">>surprising report from Consumer Report’s just found that almost ALL of the canned foods tested contained BPA -even the organic canned foods tested positive for BPA. Even worse, the canned foods labeled “BPA-free” tested positive for BPA.

So what does this mean (besides the fact that labels sometimes lie)? According to the report, if a child has several servings of canned food daily, he or she would ingest enough BPA to “cause adverse affects in animal studies.” A 165-pound adult eating one serving a day could ingest more than 80 times the recommended daily maximum.

So while Nalgene has switched to BPA-free bottles and we’ve switched to either those or aluminum water bottles – we are still ingesting dangerous levels of BPA in the canned soups, tuna, juices, green beans and vegetables we eat. BPA has been linked to everything from breast and prostate cancer to diabetes, obesity, attention-deficit disorder, fertility problems and cognitive issues.

According to Consumer Reports: Federal guidelines currently put the daily upper limit of safe exposure at 50 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight. But that level is based on experiments done in the 1980s rather than hundreds of more recent animal and laboratory studies indicating serious health risks could result from much lower doses of BPA.

Japan switched to BPA-free cans in 1997 because of the health risks and subsequent BPA testing in the general population showed BPA levels dropping by 50%. I’d say it’s time we follow suit.

What do you think?

Remember Aron Ralston – the climber who got his arm stuck in a boulder and was eventually forced to cut it off in order to survive? Well, Hollywood is making a movie about his ordeal.

The Fox Searchlight film, set to be directed by Danny Boyle, (Slumdog Millionaire) is aptly titled “127 Hours.”

It’s the stuff great movies are made of. Ralston was climbing in Canyonlands National Park in Utah in 2003 when an 800-pound boulder fell on top of him and pinned his arm so tightly he was unable to free it. He was deep in the remote BlueJohn Canyon and hadn’t told anyone where he was going, (big mistake – always let someone know when and where you’re headed into the backcountry and when to expect you back) so a rescue mission was highly unlikely.

After taking stock of his food – two burritos and candy bar crumbs – Ralston began chippping away at the boulder with his multi-tool pocket knife. He did this for 4 days until he realized it was never going to work and there was only one way he was going to live. By first breaking and then amputating his own arm. So that’s what he did – with a multitool generic Leatherman dulled from 4 days of chipping away at a boulder.

His grueling story should translate well to film, but if I’m picturing it correctly it might be a little intense to watch. I imagine lots of grimacing and eye-shielding in the audience. Can’t imagine what it was like to live it.

Read Aron Ralston’s full story at Outside magazine.

In London yesterday 112 strangers hugged each other for one minute at St. Pancras Station. Were they just feeling affectionate? Nope, they were celebrating <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/records-shatter-around-the-world-on-guinness-world-recordsr-day-2009-69859942.html"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Guinness World Records Day by setting one themselves.

Around the world over 200,000 people marked the anniversary of the day in 2004 when Guinness Book of World Records sold 100 million copies to become the world’s bestselling copyright title. For 24 hours yesterday, old records were smashed and new ones set.

From the serious to the silly, the Guinness Book has some edits and additions to make today. The Largest Cheerleading Dance was set by 297 cheerleaders from the Universal Cheerleading Association, the Largest Cup of Hot Chocolate (4 gallons, 11 inches tall – yum!) was poured in New York City, the Most Hula Hoops Hooped Simultaneously was set by 132 people on the CBS Early Show and someone in the UK pulled a double-decker bus 69 feet and 6 inches with their hair (!) to beat the record for Furthest Distance to Pull a Double-Decker Bus with the Hair (see photo above).

My favorite new world record was set by martial arts master Kenneth Lee for Most Apples Chopped in the Air Using a Sword in One Minute. Another good one is the Most People Sport Stacking Simultaneously which is being set today (hopefully) by 300,000 kids across the U.S.

I took part in the making of a Guinness world record once at a concert in Upstate New York for the Most People Doing the Same Dance at the Same Time – beating out the defending champ, the Macarena.

What world record could you set?

Today is Veteran’s Day and a perfect time to honor those who have fought for our freedom and sacrificed their normal lives so that we may lead ours.

It’s also a good time to think about how best to help those veterans who have had difficulties adjusting to life after combat.

One organization that’s doing exactly that is <a href="http://veteransupandrunning.org/about.html"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Veterans Up and Running in Boston, MA. A non-profit organization, Veterans Up and Running motivates Boston’s homeless vet population through the use of a team-based running program.

The program aims to get homeless vets back in the work force and off the streets by re-building their self confidence and ability to live independently.

Volunteers, employees and fitness consultants tailor running and workout programs to each team of vets who then complete them together on a set schedule. Workouts are structured to resemble U.S. Army basic training and incorporate distance running, interval training and strength training to achieve maximum results.

The team-based approach encourages veterans to share collective goals, train and compete in race events together. Committed and dedicated veterans then become eligible to win grants and scholarships for education and/or work force training and placement.

Veterans Up and Running relies on donors and volunteers, but in a hands-on way. An interesting requirement for program donors is that they must take part in at least one training session with a team of veterans within 6 months of their gift. What a great way encourage community involvement and awareness.

Thank you to all of our veterans out there – and to the many people who are lending them a hand in return.

Get out and visit one of our stunningly beautiful national parks.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, admission to all U.S. National Parks is free on Wednesday, November 11th.

Pay tribute to our troops and veterans by enjoying one of the many national treasures they have fought (or are fighting) to protect. I can’t think of a better way to show your respect for the sacrifices they’ve made in each and every one of our names.

Visit the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">National Park Service website to find a park near you or the <a href="http://gorp.away.com/special_issue/national_parks.html"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">GORP website for ideas on how best to enjoy our national parks. Go hiking, rafting, mountain biking, backpacking, kayaking, climbing, snowshoeing or just find a scenic spot and have a picnic!

Whether you visit a national park for the first time or the 50th time, enjoy it for free on Wednesday and pay tribute to the men and women who make it all possible. Happy Veteran’s Day.

There’s a new bill being proposed in Wyoming that would make it mandatory for hikers to carry <a href="http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=bear%20spray&searchdescriptions=True"target="_blank">bear spray in the backcountry. If it passes, it would be the <a href="http://outthere.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/05/bear-spray-soon-to-be-required-in-all-but-49-states/6425/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">first legislation of its kind.

Because black and grizzly bear encounters have been on the rise lately, some officials think <a href="http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=bear%20spray&searchdescriptions=True"target="_blank">bear spray may now be a necessity for all permitted backcountry hikers and campers. As we move closer and closer to bear territory and encroach on their space, we can expect even more potentially deadly encounters in the future.

Although there were only 44 fatalities from grizzly bear attacks in the 20th century, most of them happened in the last 20 years. That’s a sure sign that humans and bears are getting a little too close for comfort.

If I was hiking in grizzly country you can be sure I’d be carrying bear spray. But is it right to require it by law?

What do you think? Yay or nay on the Wyoming bear spray law?

Along with the snow, come the slides – it’s officially avalanche season in the backcountry. This past weekend, a 17-year-old skier was buried up to his <a href="http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/21492390/detail.html"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">neck in an avalanche near Copper Mountain in Colorado. Thankfully, he survived thanks to his diligent friends.

Luckily for the teenager, his friends witnessed the slide and were able to locate him quickly and dig him out. They then called 911 from a cell phone and Summit County rescuers were able to transport him by helicopter to a medical center nearby where he was listed in critical condition. Rescuers said he was lucky to get out alive.

“It (the avalanche) was 15 feet wide at the top, expanding to 65 to 75 feet wide at the toe, and about 500 to 600 vertical feet in length. The snow failed right down to the ground, and there were a lot of rocks,” said Kevin Kelble, the flight paramedic at the scene. “You’re getting swept down a slope that is covered in rocks and dirt and just nasty, nasty terrain and you are going through the grinder.”

Officials are warning that this year will be a particularly active avalanche season. “There have been seven incidents and one close call reported in Colorado in October. Nine people have been caught, three of them partially buried and two of them fully buried,” said Spencer Logan of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. “It’s just fascinating that we’re almost on a record-setting pace. And I’m really surprised, to be honest with you , that we haven’t had our first fatality,” Kelble said.

All backcountry skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and snowmobilers should be trained in avalanche safety and carrying the proper gear – avalanche beacons and transmitters, <a href="http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=avalanche%20probe&searchdescriptions=True""target="_blank">avalanche probes and <a href="http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=avalanche%20shovel&searchdescriptions=True""target="_blank">avalanche shovels at the very least. Wearing an Avalung is also a smart move if you’ll be skiing in avalanche-prone terrain. Sierra Trading Post carries <a href="http://www.sierratradingpost.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?allwords=avalung&searchdescriptions=True""target="_blank">Black Diamond Avalung Backpacks that provide air in case you become buried by a slide.

Be smart out there – it could just save your life!

Now this is something you don’t hear every day (because it’s the first time it has ever happened). A PGA Tour golfer was <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/11/03/golf.pga.tour.doping.ban/index.html"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">suspended yesterday for the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

40-year-old Doug Barron, who’s been a professional golfer since 1992, tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs last week and has been banned from the Tour for an entire year. The PGA is not saying what drugs Barron tested positive for, but he is denying that he took any drugs to enhance his performance. This is the first time a player has been banned since the PGA began drug testing in the summer of 2008.

“I would like to apologize for any negative perception of the Tour and its players resulting from my suspension,” Barron said in a statement on the PGA Tour official web site. “I want my fellow Tour members and the fans to know that I did not intend to gain an unfair competitive advantage or enhance my performance while on Tour.”

I’m not sure what type of drug would help a golfer out. Cyclists usually get busted for blood boosters and baseball players for steroids, but I’m not sure what type of performance enhancers would illegally improve a golf game. Apparently, Barron’s game has not improved at all over the years and he has also been known to have numerous medical problems, which may explain his use of drugs.

What do you think? Was Barron taking drugs for performance or is this all just a misunderstanding?
