Banff Mountain Photography Contest Winners

Banff Grand PrizeThe winners of the 2009 Banff Mountain Photography Contest have been announced and the photos are nothing short of extraordinary. Presented by National Geographic and The Camera Store, the contest received 4,000 entries from 41 different countries.

The grand prize winning photo was taken in Switzerland by Nathalie Daoust and is called Tamas- Frozen In Time. Here’s what Daoust has to say about her winning photo: “I was struck by the immanence and perpetuity of the Alps, as well as by the eerie perfection of its overpowering peaks. Compelled to carefully register a response to this physical environment, these photographs reveal an acute sensitivity to the landscape, a fleeting moment standing still.”

Buffalo at Grand GeyserOf course, every winning photo (there were six category winners in addition to the grand prize winner) is stunning. My two favorites are Buffalo at Grand Geyser, the winner from the Y2Y Region Prize by Kent Gunnufson, and the winner of the Mountain Flora/Fauna category, called Lone Wolf Howling by Cindy Goeddel.

Lone Wolf HowlingGoeddel says of her now famous photo, “After 69 years of being without wolves, the howl of a wild wolf in Yellowstone is both miraculous and extraordinary. The wolf has returned to Yellowstone where he has always belonged. The success of the wolf reintroduction will arguably stand as one of the pivotal conservation achievements of our day.”
