Camp Food for Dummies: Cheeseburger in a Can

Cheeseburger_In_a_can.jpgDoes the thought of eating one more dehydrated meal while camping make you want to just stay home? Does traditional camp food leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied?

If so, you might be pretty psyched about the thought of a go-anywhere cheeseburger in a can. That’s right… I said it. An entire “gourmet” (I use the term “gourmet” loosely here) cheeseburger in a can! A German camping supply company recently created the burger-in-a-can for campers, backpackers, and other outdoor enthusiasts who are sick of dehydrated camp food. [Now they're just sick.]

Before you get too excited, you should know the cheeseburger-in-a-can isn’t available for shipping to the U.S. yet. And it doesn’t look quite like that picture above would lead you to believe (see below), but it is on the market. If you’re really craving a canned cheeseburger, you can buy one off eBay for about $30. [Why anyone would, I don't know.]

All you have to do is put the unopened can in a pot of boiling water for one minute before popping the top and enjoying your cheeseburger. According to The A.V. Club, however, “enjoying” might not be the right word. They did a taste test of the new canned cheeseburger and the reviews were unanimous… it’ s disgusting.

Here are some initial reactions from taste testers:

• “Oh, that looks so gross. It’s so grey. It’s the greyest meat ever.”

• “It looks more greenish to me.”

• “It’s got this horrible film on it.”

• “It’s really mealy-looking. Does anyone read German? Are we sure there’s meat in there?”

• “It tastes like the hamburgers you get in elementary school.”

• “Oh, auuugh. It’s awful. Have these people ever had hamburger before?”

• “Boy, that taste really stays in your mouth, doesn’t it?”

• “That was so bad.”

After reading these reviews, would you bring a canned cheeseburger on your next camping trip?

  • Sam says:

Now that just looks awful… and they actually ate the darn thing! I think I will stick with re-hydrating soups and oatmeal out on the trail.

  • Steve says:

That just looks nasty. There are better alternatives to freeze dried foods.

If you are going to take canned food backpacking, you could take canned salmon, it would be much better than this.

There is no way that I am going to try this “Hamburger”.

  • Russ says:

I’d eat it. I think the best way would be to get shitfaced drunk and have about three of those out of a can and suffer for the next few days. It can’t be that bad.
