Looks like Sigg recently had a recall on their water bottles as well because of the water-based epoxy resin liner:

Do what I do, take a drink out of a glass before you leave the house! When did everyone decide that they needed a drink of water in their hands every second of the day. Here's and idea - use a drinking fountain! If you have to use walk around with a water in your hand, make it stainless steel - plastic and aluminum cause cancer - (eventually any plastic will give you cancer - it is a chemical) and aluminum will give you alzheimers. Glass / stainless steel will not. Just a thought!

I hear that plastic bottles with #7 have BPA, on the other hand, I also hear that plastic bottles with #7 do not have BPA. So which should I believe?

Amber, there are BPA-free plastic bottles - I wonder if those would work?

Brad, a lot of the newer Nalgene bottles are made without BPA. The older ones are, so my guess is you might want to replace yours, especially if they have any cracks. I threw all mine out and replaced them with Sigg bottles.

Thanks! Hope this helps.

This may be a silly question. I recently bought a North Face bag and received a complimentary water bottle with it. I'm not sure if it was stainless steel or aluminum, but it froze in my truck while I was on a snowboarding trip and the material split open making the bottle unusable. What brand/material would you be able to recommend that did not have this same effect?

After all of these scares, I would really like to switch my water bottle to something safer, but I want to make sure that I'm spending my minimal college dollars on something practical and worth my money. I really appreciate your advice if you have any.

Thanks!

Thanks for your comment.

I appreciate you taking the time to send your thoughts. I haven't been able to uncover any information about glass, porcelain, or stainless steel that would verify what you said, however. I'm not entirely sure I understand.

To better understand the health hazards of food containers one must first understand the manufacturing process. The hazards of Nalgene products were discovered due to a better understanding of their manufacturing processes.

With continued focus on this issue and review of manufacturing of alternatives to Nalgene products, reveals similar concerns.

The lead content of stainless steel products activated by heat and cold extremes reveals that they are as safe as eating the chipped paint from a 1930's home. Resorting to glass or porcelain products exposes the user to formaldehyde levels of a pickled high school frog.

As a molecular engineer from California Institute of Technology at Pasadena, I fear that my duty to inform consumers nationwide of the fraud that is being perpetrated in replacing one hazardous material with another.
