Hikers Find Steve Fossett’s ID, Searchers Find Plane

Steve_Fossett_Wife.jpgIt seems the mysterious disappearance of Steve Fossett has finally been solved. Yesterday, a pilot’s license bearing his name, $1,000 in cash and pieces of a sweater were found by hikers in California.

The possessions, found in a bush near Mammoth Lakes, California, were discovered hours before search officials spotted the wreckage of his plane.

“They did locate an aircraft which we have now confirmed is the one Steve Fossett was flying when it disappeared last Labor Day,” Sheriff John Anderson said in this article on CNN.

He further said that searchers found no human remains but the crash appeared “so severe I doubt someone would’ve walked away from it.”

If you haven’t heard, millionaire Steve Fossett went missing in 2007 while on a “pleasure flight over the Sierra Nevada mountain range.” He hasn’t been seen since, but no remains (of either his body or the plane) have ever been found. He was officially presumed dead in February of this year.

Earlier this year there were reports and suspicions that Fossett may have faked his own death to escape some messy financial obligations and a marriage on the brink. But, now, that appears to have simply been speculation. The truth is, no one knew what happened to Steve Fossett. Until now.

Mammoth Lakes is roughly 116 miles from the Flying-M Ranch outside Minden, Nevada where Fossett took off that fateful day. There’s no word on whether or not the area was included in the extensive searches that happened after the disappearance.

Imagine finding Steve Fossett’s ID while you were on a hike and helping lead officials to his plane. His disappearance has baffled officials for over a year now. Talk about an incredible find!
