If you live in, or have skied in, Colorado, you know driving I-70 from Denver to the ski resorts can be a total drag. Traffic, congestion, accidents, and closures are sometimes enough to make you want to just stay home and ski that little hill in your backyard instead.
But that would be boring. The trick is to time your trip right. Now, thanks to Powder Chimp, you can take a look at both traffic conditions on I-70 and snow conditions at some of the major resorts to gauge whether or not it’s worth the drive. Once you’re up there, it’s always worth it… until it takes you 5 hours to get home.
Of course, conditions on the road can change quickly and there’s always a risk you’ll be stuck waiting in the Eisenhower Tunnel. But that just makes you all the more extreme. If skiing and boarding in Colorado were totally hassle free, it just wouldn’t be the same…
Speaking of skiing and boarding, if you need any snow gear for the season, check out the incredible selection and rock-bottom prices at Sierra Trading Post. Shop now and get an extra 10% off new inventory!

Thanks for the good word!
We’re working on some more improvements to the collection and representation of the weather and traffic conditions. We’ve included some road closure data but will soon have some nice simple representations of that kind of vital information on the map and google earth representations themselves.
You also might notice the google search trigger in the lower right part of the Earth frame. You can find places to stay, eat, rent equipment… using it.
We’re working on the various lift line cameras! There are a bunch of cameras up in the ski areas and we’ve only just begun. We’re also getting snowpack data that we can lay over the Google map tiles. So you can see snow in the google earth representation. Views and data from the parking areas is also on the agenda.
We’ve added a little game where you can ski around and in a little van that taunts you about where you’re going and stuff. When we’ve completed our snow and signage layers it will actually be a GREAT way to pre-ski a bunch of your destinations to prepare you for a better experience on the slope.
Look for our iPhone and Andriod implementation soon!
Thanks again for the great post!!
Cheers!
Chimpy
