Skier BASE Jumps Off Mt. Hood: Video

Skier Matthias Giraud BASE jumped off Mississippi Head in the Mt. Hood Triangle last week and he’s got the video to prove it.

At 7,159 feet, Mississippi Head is one of the most dangerous spots on the mountain. It is part of the Mount Hood Triangle where climbers and skiers face the danger of tumbling down into Zig Zag Canyon.

Shown from a few different angles, the video gives you a good sense of the 253-foot jump…

The “BASE” in BASE jump stands for the four fixed objects from which a BASE jumper jumps (try saying that five times fast)…

B = Building
A = Antenna (an uninhabited tower such as an aerial mast)
S = Span (a bridge or arch)
E = Earth (a cliff or other natural formation)

While the act of BASE jumping isn’t illegal, jumpers can get into trouble if they don’t get permission from the owners of the B,A,S or E… or the area where they intend to land. The BASE jump off Mississippi Head was found to be legal… but the U.S. Forest Service is “not encouraging others to try the same thing.”
