Can a Video Game Make You Fit? Nintendo Says Yes

Wii_Fit.jpgIf your kids (or you) are going to play video games, they (or you) might as well get some exercise at the same time. The Nintendo Wii Fit is set to roll out next month and promises an active alternative to the usual couch-potato routine of traditional video games.

In fact, Nintendo is marketing it as a home gym rather than a “game.” The Wii Fit, which costs about $90, includes a balance board for measuring body mass index and includes workouts like strength training, aerobics, stretching, and balance. During each exercise, the screen will tell you how you’re doing and if you’re maintaining “core balance” to get the most out of your workout.

From the article on CNN…

With its new game “Wii Fit” hitting stores Monday, Nintendo is looking to bring exercise into the home, making people more aware of their bodies and starting to create a comfortable, fun environment to get healthy.

Personal trainer and fitness expert Robert Dothard said making exercise available and enjoyable in your home means reaching an audience of people who often feel embarrassed walking in to a traditional gym.

So will the Wii Fit be used by children who enjoy traditional video games or by adults who’d rather not work out at the gym? Perhaps both. I’m all for anything that gets people off the couch… even if it’s a video game. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.

p.s. If you’re planning on trading your X Box for a Wii Fit, better trade in your old sweats for some new workout clothes.
