Explorers Discover One of World’s Deepest Caves

If you think caves are creepy, here’s something really spooky – explorers recently discovered one of the world’s deepest cave shafts in China. At a depth of 3,100 feet, the cave measures nearly one kilometer. That’s a long way down!

An international caving team discovered the cave near the Chinese village of Tian Xing. The team of spelunkers spent two months exploring the cave system and four to five days at a time camping deep within its bowels. They discovered a vast network of tunnels and caverns, with waterfalls and no doubt lots of darkness.

The new cave system, deep as it may be, is not the deepest in the world. The world’s deepest cave is Krubera in Georgia, which is 6,822 ft deep, followed by Lamprechtsofen in Austria (5,354 ft) and Gouffre Mirolda in France (5,335 ft). Still… these new Chinese caverns are well below ground.

Just thinking about spending four to five days camping in a cave almost a kilometer underground gives me the creeps. I’ve seen ‘The Descent’ – I know what’s down there.
