The Most Dangerous Sport in the U.S. is…

It’s not football. It’s not hockey. It’s cheerleading!
That’s right – cheerleading is far more dangerous than any other sport in the U.S. according to a new report from the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The report looked at all high school and college sports, both males and females.
Researchers have long known how dangerous cheerleading is, but records were poorly kept until recently. An update to the record-keeping system last year found that between 1982 and 2007, there were 103 fatal, disabling or serious injuries recorded among female high school athletes, with the vast majority (67) occurring in cheerleading. The next most dangerous sports: gymnastics (nine such injuries) and track (seven).
The most dangerous label comes even after the number of cheerleading injuries and fatalities fell from previous years records.
“Progress has been slow, but there has been an increased emphasis on cheerleading safety,” said the study’s author Frederick O. Mueller. “Continued data collection on all types of cheerleading injuries will hopefully show that these safety measures are working to reduce injuries.”
The next most dangerous sports after cheerleading are gymnastics and track. No mention of football anywhere.
What do you think about the most dangerous designation?
p.s. Break-dancers apparently have a lot to worry about, too. Protective gear, anyone?

I guess that really depends on your definition of sport, eh?

I know some people don’t think of cheerleading as a sport. But I have a confession to make – I was a cheerleader in high school. I also played softball and soccer and out of the three worked the hardest and was in the best shape (of my life) while cheerleading. It’s extremely challenging and competitive. We went to and won the national championships in Orlando my senior year – ask anyone there and they’d tell you it’s definitely a sport and less about cheering for the boys than one might think.

I think you guys got it totally wrong. First of all, we are a sport. Secondly, it isn’t the most dangerous. Read the report. Maybe check out other sources like http://www.cheersafety.org or http://www.varsity.com . Football has had hundreds of deaths. In fact, football had more fatalities this year than cheer had total catastrophic injuries (with no fatalities). So whats more dangerous?! Yes, it’s tough and every sport is dangerous, but our team works hard to make sure we do things safely with spotters and mats.

Hi CheerChica,
Thanks for your comment. I went to Cheersafety.org and found the post on June 30th to be a good counterpoint to the article referenced above. I was in no way trying to tarnish the image of cheerleading – I just found the statistics interesting.
Every sport has injuries and I know your coaches are striving to make cheerleading safer. I’ll add some facts from the site you sent me to my original post. Thanks again.
