Running Program Motivates Homeless Veterans

Veterans Up and RunningToday is Veteran’s Day and a perfect time to honor those who have fought for our freedom and sacrificed their normal lives so that we may lead ours.

It’s also a good time to think about how best to help those veterans who have had difficulties adjusting to life after combat.

One organization that’s doing exactly that is Veterans Up and Running in Boston, MA. A non-profit organization, Veterans Up and Running motivates Boston’s homeless vet population through the use of a team-based running program.

The program aims to get homeless vets back in the work force and off the streets by re-building their self confidence and ability to live independently.

Volunteers, employees and fitness consultants tailor running and workout programs to each team of vets who then complete them together on a set schedule. Workouts are structured to resemble U.S. Army basic training and incorporate distance running, interval training and strength training to achieve maximum results.

The team-based approach encourages veterans to share collective goals, train and compete in race events together. Committed and dedicated veterans then become eligible to win grants and scholarships for education and/or work force training and placement.

Veterans Up and Running relies on donors and volunteers, but in a hands-on way. An interesting requirement for program donors is that they must take part in at least one training session with a team of veterans within 6 months of their gift. What a great way encourage community involvement and awareness.

Thank you to all of our veterans out there – and to the many people who are lending them a hand in return.
