New York City to Ban Cars for 3 Days in August

Park_Ave_Closing.jpgIn order to make the city more pedestrian and cyclist friendly, New York City Mayor Bloomberg is banning cars from certain streets for a few hours, and for a few days, in August. Modeled after similar programs in London and Paris, “Summer Streets” will be held on August 9, 16, and 23.

The car-less route runs along Park Avenue. This famous street is fitting because the point of the plan, according to the executive director of Transportation Alternatives, Paul Steely White, is to make the streets “more like parks than thoroughfares.” There will be health and fitness classes along the route as well as places to rent bicycles. Lance Armstrong was even on hand to announce plans for “Summer Streets” with Mayor Bloomberg.

Dog Saves Boy From Drowning in River

Search_and_rescue_dog.jpgIn case you had any reason to doubt that dogs truly are man’s best friend, you’ve got to read this story.

As heavy rains cause rivers to rise in the Midwest, one little boy in Nebraska was pulled from a raging river by the family dog.

Ordinarily, Tony Bailey can swim in the Platte River, but the currents have gotten a lot stronger lately. When he jumped in at his usual spot, but couldn’t get back to shore, his dog Jake, a 4 year-old Labrador retriever (not pictured), jumped in to save him. Apparently Jake understood Tony’s cries for help, swam out to him and towed the boy (who’d gone under water several times) to safety.

Female Hikers Missing in Denali Found Alive

Erica_Nelson.jpgThe female hikers, Erica Nelson and Abby Flantz, who went missing June 12th in Denali National Park, Alaska, have been found. There’s no word yet on exactly what happened to the two roommates (who were just out for an overnight hike), but they’ve been reunited with their families and that’s the important thing.

Apparently Erica used her cell phone to call her mom, Ellane Nelson. Mrs. Nelson received the call during a briefing at search headquarters. According to the article on CNN, when Mrs. Nelson saw Erica’s name on the caller ID, “it looked like she’d seen a ghost.” After not hearing anything for days, that phone call was probably the last thing she’d expected.

Olympians To Run in Asics with Rice-Husk Soles

Rice_Husk_Asics.jpgIf you’re a runner, you know how crucial the right running shoes are to your performance. Whether you’re training or racing, the running shoes on your feet need to be comfortable, lightweight and supportive with durable traction soles. That’s why I love Asics so much - they have all that and more. I won’t run in anything else.

Neither will many Olympic marathon runners. Their Asics are a bit different, though. Japanese master craftsman Hitoshi Mimura, is making Asics running shoes for Olympians with rice husk soles. According to him, rice husks are not only eco-friendly, but they have superior grip on wet surfaces. Because the Beijing course will most likely be slippery, (from rain, misting stations, stone surfaces, etc.) runners need all the traction they can get.
